YouTube is reportedly working on a short video platform that will be a competitor for TikTok. This platform name is Shorts.
Reported by The Verge, Thursday (2/4/2020), Shorts allow users to upload short videos which will then be displayed in feeds on the mobile application, mirirp TikTok. The advantage is, Shorts can utilize licensed songs that are already in the YouTube Music catalog.
This is what distinguishes Shorts from TikTok, where TikTok allows users to use audio and music from their database, and produce videos using the audio.
If you see TikTok growth, it’s not strange if YouTube also wants to profit from the realm of the short video. Over the past two years according to App Annie, the number of TikTok users has grown 125%.
While The Information says the TikTok application has been downloaded 842 million times, both from the App Store and Play Store, over the past 12 months. Increased by 15% year on year.
This is not the first time YouTube has emulated another popular platform to be presented on its own platform. Previously they also made features such as Instagram Stories to appear on YouTube.
YouTube is also not the only platform interested in short video platforms such as TikTok. Facebook also has Lasso, which is a similar platform and was developed secretly in a number of countries, one of which is Brazil.
